Why St. Vincent's East?
Family Medicine is a wonderful field of medicine that allows you to become fluent across several disciplines of medicine.  You can be delivering a baby one minute and admitting someone from the ER with chest pain the next minute.  St. Vincent’s East Family Medicine is an amazing residency program that provides a compassionate atmosphere with a multitude of opportunities and experiences to not only learn but to also flourish.  In the words of a past graduate of our residency program, everyday we have the ability to “touch lives” professionally, medically and spiritually.

Why St. Vincent's East?
I rotated as a medical student at St. Vincent’s East and found the faculty to be caring and interested in their residents lives and their patients’ lives. It is a family oriented program that encourages teamwork and positive attitudes. The faculty at the hospital is very knowledgeable and eager to teach residents. There is a one to one teaching with specialist in the hospital that I find very helpful and educational. Overall it is a program for someone looking to become a well rounded physician.

Why St. Vincent's East?
I am so thankful I am a resident at St. Vincent’s East.  Since beginning my intern year, I have been surrounded by faculty and other residents who are more than willing to help out in any way.  The faculty members are wonderful physicians, excellent teachers and mentors.  They are not only interested in your medical training but also your personal and spiritual development.  I have already seen many patients touched by the emphasis placed upon faith in medicine that is practiced here.  This program also enables you to balance your medical training with family life. It is a wonderful place to practice Family Medicine!

Stephen Higgins, D.O.
Undergraduate Education:
University of Alabama at Birmingham
Birmingham, AL
Medical School:
Nova Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine  Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Hometown: Rock Creek, AL

Interests, Hobbies, Family Life:
I am married to Vicki, who is a pediatrics nurse at The Children’s Hospital of Alabama. We live in Trussville and have a Schnauzer named Bailey. My wife and I attend church at Rock Creek Church of God and we enjoy fellowship with our family and friends whenever we can.  We also like to watch or attend University of Alabama sporting events. I like to play basketball and play on a church team. I like playing and building guitars and small woodworking projects. I also like to wakeboard and spend time on the river.

Why St. Vincent's East?
I chose St. Vincent’s East FP because of the family atmosphere that has developed over the years. I rotated with SVE FP as a medical student and I was impressed with the aptitude for patient care that the Resident’s possessed. Additionally, I appreciated the manner in which the Attendings taught and what each of them had to offer. I also liked the fact that both Residents and Attendings were focused on caring for patients physically, mentally and spiritually. I saw many qualities in these people that I wanted to model in my own practice and I decided that the best way to do that would be to train with people who exhibit these qualities daily.

Kimberly F. Owens, M.D.
Undergraduate Education: Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama
Medical School: University of Alabama School of Medicine, Birmingham, AL

Hometown: Cullman, AL

Interests, Hobbies, Family Life:
My husband, Brian, and I enjoy playing co-ed slow pitch softball each year. We are avid Auburn footbal fans (and all sports for that matter), and we enjoy going to Auburn every chance we get. I love doing things outdoors like mountain biking, skiing, gardening, fishing, deer and dove hunting, among other activities. We are members of North Shelby Baptist Church and enjoy participating in church activites and Sunday School. I have a very supportive family that lives in Cullman and Cottonwood, Alabama, and I have a very energetic seven year old nephew that keeps me busy as well. I love spending time with family and friends as well as traveling to visit extended family in Missouri.

Why St. Vincent's East?
I had the benefit of doing a rotation here as a medical student, and I knew immediately that this was the place for me. The faculty is second to none, and the residents are very bright and gifted in the art and science of medicine. This program truly prepares each physician for practicing in the real world and dealing with the uncertainty of mastering the "business side of medicine".

I was also encouraged by the faith based foundation on which the program stands and the supportive family-friendly environment created by the faculty and residents. One other unique aspect that I found here is that the hospital administration, specialists, and nurses are very welcoming and are excited about helping our residents learn and succeed.

Brandon B. Slagley, M.D.
Undergraduate Education: Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama
Medical School: University of Alabama School of Medicine, Birmingham, Alabama

Hometown: Greenville, Alabama

Interests, Hobbies, Family Info:
I'm married with 2 young children. We're very involved with the Christian Medical Ministry of Alabama (CMMA), which is a wonderful ministry to the students and residents here in Birmingham! In my free time I enjoy basketball, tennis, working out, hunting, fishing (really anything outdoors) and of course spending as much time as possible with my family. I'm also very interested in medical missions and went on 2 trips overseas during medical school.

Why St. Vincent's East?
I rotated as a forth year medical student and was very impressed by the faculty, residents, clinic staff, and hospital specialists. They each took true interest in me personally and my life outside of medicine. Now as a resident I'm still encouraged by the emphasis on personal and spiritual development, but now appreciate the focus on strong, evidence based family medicine. This program prepares us well to practice the full range of family medicine from chronic clinic management to acute hospital care and everything in between. I'm so blessed to have chosen this program.

I have a ten+ year old Pekingese dog that I love to death! I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, cooking (and eating!), and Auburn football.

Why St. Vincent's East?
St. Vincent's East is a great program with great staff. The hospital is very nice, clean, and has the best nurses. I worked with a graduate of the program for my medical school rotations and was able to see the physician skills as well as his business skills and knew that this is the best opportunity to learn the art of medicine.

Ankrehah C. Trimble, D.O.
Undergraduate Education: Spelman College Atlanta,GA
Medical School: Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, Kansas City, MO

Hometown: Marion, Alabama

Interests, Hobbies, Family Life:
Spending time with family and friends, traveling, reading, going to church, shopping, trying new recipes, and spending time with my spunky shih tzu Auri Cason.

Why St. Vincent's East?
Afer spending 6 years away from Alabama and in some of the coldest states ever, it was time to come back home!!! I love that the program is family oriented and has very strong Christian values. The program is small enough that there is one on one preceptoring as well as emphasis on medical missions. Also Birmingham is in a good location!!! Just a drive away from Atlanta, Memphis, the beach, and Marion.
