Message from Our Director
Marion H. Sims, MD., A.B.F.P., F.A.A.F.P.

Why Family Medicine?
I am a fourth generation family physician but during my medical school years, like most other students, I struggled to decide between a career in primary care versus the appeal of specialization. Now, twenty something years later, my perspective allows me to see how right my choice to become a family medicine physician was for it has led to a rich and fulfilling career.

Addressing the medical needs of my patients is critical to me in my role and as a family physician. I am confident in my abilities to handle the wide diversity of complex and undifferentiated patients encountered in a residency training program. However, family medicine offers more than just medical care. It is a specialty concerned with the treatment of the whole person and the entire family - mind, body, and spirit. During my career, I have had the unique and privileged opportunity to form relationships with many and varied individuals and families. Such associations have allowed me intimate access into life's most difficult and wonderful moments. The richness of human relationship afforded by a calling to medicine has been greatly magnified in the specialty of family medicine.

I believe that family medicine is more than the practice of medicine. It is a ministry.

Why St. Vincent's East Family Medicine Residency?
We are a community program sponsored by the St. Vincent’s East hospital of the St. Vincent’s Health System of Birmingham, AL and have been in operation for the past 30 years.

One main attraction of the program lies in the fact that there are no competing residency programs at our facility. Thus, the resident is consistently in a one-on-one learning situation with his or her attending physician. A wide variety of private physicians serve as mentors because they truly enjoy the personal and intellectual stimulation such a role offers them. With strengths in ambulatory experience, pediatrics, inpatient adult medicine and international medicine opportunities, we also serve as a teaching center for the University of Alabama School of Medicine’s third and fourth year students as well as the Samford University School of Pharmacy’s senior pharmacy doctoral students.

The full-time faculty members of SVE Family Medicine Residency Program are all board-certified physicians who are committed to maintaining Biblical principles in their relationships with both patients and residents. It is our steadfast intent to foster an atmosphere that cultivates excellence in all arenas of the resident's life and medical education. We are not only dedicated to the whole patient, but to the whole resident
